Self Care for Students

It shouldn’t take a pandemic or global unrest for us to take a moment and focus on self care, But, as Neil deGrasse Tyson says, higher education encourages a culture “where you’re only happy when you’re sad, when you’re overworked.”  However, research demonstrates that stress is cumulative and we do not perform well when under prolonged stress.  Therefore, instructors concerned with creating an environment where both they and their students bring their best should be equally concerned about both practicing self care and encouraging their students to do the same.

See this advice guide from Inside Higher Education on the importance of caring for oneself and students, and this page for more resources that encourage self care for students.

Here is an example of student self care resources developed for the Leadership Studies program in Spring 2020.
